I’ve never had the pleasure of reading anything by Mary Ting until I got my hands on Helix — and it was worth reading every page. You ever get so famished for a good genre story? That’s how I’ve been with science fiction’s lately, so imagine my utter satisfaction when I couldn’t tear myself away from Helix.

First off, I love that the main character is a woman with killer (as in awesome) abilities and loyal devotion to those she cares about. Ava is such a complex, strong, and ever-changing character — and I loved seeing how fierce she was in the face of finding her twin sister no matter what. Not to mention, it’s so freaking hard to find likable, capable female MCs in science fiction these days. Even when the truth was hurled at her, when secrets became sharp as knives, Ava stuck to her guns the best she could. She wasn’t perfect, but she stayed true to herself as a character.

The plot itself resembled a rather tangled spiderweb, giving off Bourne Identity-esque vibes with enough thrills to literally jack up my heart rate. This propelled the action, kept the whole story moving forward like a rushing river, and drawing me into the thick of conspiracies, betrayals, unfolding secrets, and shocking revelations.

The only regret I have, to be honest, is that I didn’t read the first book in this five part installment. Ting packs so much detail into such a short novel — and it creates this tension-filled adventure that steals the air right out of your lungs, but this also meant I missed out on so much that happened in the first book. And though it was easy to read a summary or poke around other blogs for quick details, I have a feeling I could have loved or, in the very least, appreciated Helix even more had I read book one, ISAN. It would have filled in so many holes for me.

Overall, I was drunk on the fast-paced action. There was so much adrenaline, so much tension that I felt anchored during this wild read. And I found myself invested in not only Ava’s fate, but also in Rhett, in the rebels, in her crew. In the whole world, really. And when everything came to light? When crap hit the fan? When everything hung in the balance?

And did I mention that EPIC cliffhanger?!

Gods, I’ll let you read it and find out for yourself.
