Happy Monday, my fierce valkyries! I want to open this post by stressing this is not one of Bookish Valhalla’s readathons, nor is it one we’re participating in officially this season. We’re merely the messengers spreading holiday cheer by shouting all about this merry and cheerful reading event. So pour yourself a piping cuppa cocoa and wrap yourself up in the warmest, chunkiest blanket you’ve got because December is upon us (2 weeks!) and there’s no better way to greet it than with books.

What Is the Reindeer Readathon?

The Reindeer Readathon is a festive reading competition between FIVE teams: Team Mistletoe, Team Snowflake, Team Stocking, Team Nutcracker, and Team Candy Cane. To be honest, I’m a little sad there isn’t a Team Egg Nog, but hey! Maybe next year. When you sign up to participate, you’ll be sorted into one of these teams. Then you’ll compete against eachother from December 1st to December 31st. There are, of course, prompts, all themed off of Santa’s reindeer pals:

  • Dasher (15 Points): A book with a one-word title
  • Dancer (10 Points): A companion novel or a sequel (as in a dancing parter)
  • Prancer (15 Points): A book with a map in it
  • Vixen (25 Points): A Book with a fox on the cover (Alternatively, for only 20 points, a strong female lead)
  • Comet (30 Points): A book you find intimidating.
  • Cupid (10 Points): Read a genre that you love
  • Donner (15 Points): A book with something hidden inside (under the dust jacket, chapter heads, art, etc.)
  • Blitzen (20 Points): A book with some sort of struggle (internal struggle, war, battle, etc.)
  • Rudolph (20 Points): A book where the main character doesn’t seem to fit in (outsider, misfit)

Neverfear, valkyries. These prompts will be emailed to all those joining in the fun, so no need to commit them to memory! There are bonus prompts AND THERE WILL BE PRIZES. You can learn more about the Reindeer Readathon from Erik over at Breakeven Books:

Who Are the Hosts?

Your hosts are the most wonderful elves reindeer of the whole North Pole! We’ve checked the list thrice–and they’re all rather nice! (wow, I have no idea where these ryhmes are coming from!)

I’ve been a HUGE fan of Erik’s channel. He’s so sweet, funny, and creative! And incredibly positive in most of his videos so….you know the vibes of this readathon will be nothing short of FANTASTIC!

Want To Join In the Jolly Good Fun?

Doesn’t this sound like the best festive end to the year ever? Think about it. You sitting by a fire, cuppa cocoa (or spiked nog) with the faintest jingles of music in the background, all snug as snow flurries by the window. It’s the perfect weather and time of year for bookish cheer! If you’re in need of something jolly indeed…
